The funny thing about this painting in particular, is that people will project there emotions and memories on it, and it will generally reflect something haunting. At least for me it does.

This is true for me- while someone is depending on such apparatus, the world around may well be foggy, bewildering, or nearly non-existent. The equipment can become a strange sort of 'god'.
