Grandmother With Knives
2007
Oil on Canvas
24"x18"

My grandfather collected knives and hung them behind the couch in their home. He's passed away now but I thought the juxtaposition of my grandmother with the violent imagery of knives would be an interesting contrast.

I can just imagine her saying, "How do you think I lived this long?" Great painting. Your work has a lot of emotion in it.

i feel like i'm there.

lord a mercy
now if this were my grandma, she'd be plucking knives off the wall and hurling them at us.

Besides your exceptional compositional style and the juxtaposition of Grandma to the knives, I think my favorite part about this piece is the enigmatic works bordering the subject. I will never know the painting to the right of Grandma nor the title of the books sitting to her left nor would I ever want to.

Think you did a fantastic job on your grandma.. softer tones and strokes. I enjoyed the components and composition but she stood out most.

Not only is this a very strong and emotionally loaded portrait but it also seems to refer to a watercolour done by Wyeth called 'the Kuerners', perhaps you know this painting.

The one with the gun? Wyeth is a god, I love his work. This is high praise. Thanks.

Indeed the one with the gun, what an amazing painting! Wyeth is a genius. The subjects you paint appear to be heading in the same direction as Wyeths', a direction in painting hardly explored in general by artist and one that has a great potential.

Actually it was my grandfather who passed away, she is still alive...thanks for your thoughts though!
My grandfather started collecting them after he served in WWII.

You were right :D Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, as always. I like the effect with the...uh...(what's the opposite of foreshortening? forelengthening?) of her hands. The interlocking fingers are a fascinating study of tones and color.

Every time I look at your artwork, I just want to go paint. I know I've said this before, but your work always reminds me why I love to paint, especially with oils :]

hahahha...aww man. what great humor...grandma and knives. classic!

and once again your style of painting is always just magnificent! the colors you use are amazing...and well hmm yeah this kinda reminds me of some of lucian freud's work in the way you aply the paint and separate each blot of color.

must say that her hands have to be my favorite part.

well done!

Wow.
I really like the perspective :D Your use of color on the skin is wonderfull.

I allways find it a bit hard to get a pushed perspective and such to look "real" in that sence ( i'm horrible at describing. >_> writing in english doesn't really help either :P hope you understood what I ment )
