"Cyril In The Sea Runner"
2009
Oil On Panel
12"x16"

This is another painting for my "Newfoundland Portraits" Exhibition at Abbozzo Gallery in November, 2009.

As soon as Cyril came out of his house in that hat, I knew I had to paint him.

Great job! I'm curious though. Did you work from a photo? It looks so life like. I can't imagine him posing for very long.

Oh yes, i work exclusively from photos. I have no patience to have someone stand there and get uncomfortable. Not fair to them....its my job as the painter to make it look interesting and hopefully not stilted....so in school i worked from the figure/life entirely....no, all photo.

wonderful warm flesh tones and beautiful use of contrast. and this may sound silly, but i really love the implied buildings in the background. you communicate them so simply yet so well.

Great portrait! I like the expression on his face, how you've captured the sheen of his jacket and your brushwork is amazing! I've recently finished my first oil painting and found it quite difficult. How long roughly does it take you to finish a painting?

Depends. It can be from 8-60 hours...it all depends :) Sorry, wish I had a better answer for you!
